They say that the love for cars is for men I disagree. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a love for cars. My dad use to race funny cars at Irwindale Speedway when I was a child and when I was nine years young I saw Mario Andrei race at Ontario Motor Speedway.
As I grew older, I watched car races on TV and if anyone was working on a car, I wanted to help or watch what was going on. My mom’s boyfriend restored old cars and one summer my brother and I begged him to let us help, so he got us two carburetors along with a couple of screwdrivers. He told my brothers and I to take the carburetors apart and then put them back together. This lit the fire that fueled my childhood passion for cars.
By the time high school rolled around, it appeared that I only dated boys that were into cars. Whether they drove Datsun B210 or muscle cars, I was drawn to their obsession. For the most part, their cars were always breaking down, so I spent a lot of time in the garage watching them wrench away. When my boyfriend’s car was running there was a dirt track that was a blast to watch and also the Friday night races at Mesa Marin. Watching Nascar on TV was also big in for me.
Moving on into my early twenties I dated a guy who was a wannabe racecar driver. He raced Winston west cars at Riverside speedway and I got to spend a lot of time in pit row. It was during this time I had the opportunity to meet a lot of the professional NASCAR drivers like Richard Petty, Bill Elliott, and Dale Earnhardt. One of my favorite driver’s Tim Richmond passed around this time after his big win.
Fast forward years later, I meet my future husband who also happens to be a big car guy. It’s been 8 years since we met and roughly fifty cars later and or love for cars have not waivered. We’ve owned everything from muscle car to foreign cars. We’ve bought and sold numerous school cars over the years and currently own a number of custom cars that we take to car shows. I am often asked if my husband makes me go to the various car events and people looked surprised when I respond, “No, I like to go to car events”. I let them know I had the car bug before I met my husband.
I have met some amazing people in the car world and have experienced some great times participating in road rally’s and a many a road trips. With this blog I look forward to reaching other women who share the same passion and love for cars so they too can share their stories.
